A Girl Named Wolf

A page for the experimental chamber pop artist, Vuk

As a teenager, I used to fantasize about living in this scene from Wim Wenders’ “Der Himmel über Berlin.” Occasionally, I still catch myself doing just that. (Perhaps that’s why I went to film school - to create the scenes I couldn’t actually live in.) The song being performed here is “Six Bells Chime,” from Crime and The City Solution’s album “Room of Lights.” At one time, each time I had my birthday, I’d make a point of having the first song I listened to at that age be extra special, and this was my 16th birthday song. For me, it’s the epitome of rock’n’roll romanticism. I enjoy the sincere, sensual theatricality of the performance, so hopelessly outdated, it would seem, in the era of Pitchfork-cool we now live in (which isn’t to say I’m nostalgic for anything - I just wish there were a little more room for uninhibited, unselfconscious emotion in the current musical climate.)

I have a huge soft spot for the Australian punk movement of the 1980s, of which Crime and The City Solution is a lesser-known ambassador. They’ve recently reunited, I hear, and have plans to release new material. Hooray! C&TCS, we love you! Welcome back!
